Support in the Jewish community

If you or someone you love lives with a condition, concern, or if you are looking for support within the Jewish community, you can find details of support groups and contact details here.

JEWISH CARE on the SOUTH COAST

Jewish Care is launching their Spring programme, which includes a new singing group called Singing for Memory. Singing for Memory is a new group that meets weekly on a Monday afternoon and is designed for those living with memory loss or dementia and their caregivers within the Jewish community on the South Coast.

Several scientific studies have looked into the cognitive, psychological, and behavioural impacts of singing and music on those with memory loss or dementia. Singing has a dual benefit for both those who are have dementia or memory loss and those who care for an individual with dementia or memory loss.

According to one study (Jeffries, Fritz, & Braun, 2003) singing combines language, music, and instinctive behaviour and responses to enhance neurological stimulation - which means that singing is a versatile way to prompt brain activity.

The new Jewish Care group Singing for Memory is a group activity, and group musical interventions may help to improve social interaction between people with dementia as it reduces the level of agitation and can promote relaxation (Lin et al., 2011).

The new Jewish Care Singing for Memory group meets every Monday.

Helping hands in brighton & hove

Helping Hands was founded in 2001 with just a mobile phone and a vision to meet the needs of the local Jewish community.

Today, we are a vital part of Brighton & Hove’s Jewish community, supported by over 70 dedicated volunteers.

As a cross-communal support network, we provide practical and emotional assistance to those in need. Our service is known for being caring, efficient, and confidential, and we currently assist over 100 clients, having responded to more than 20,000 requests since our inception.

Helping Hands is entirely volunteer-run, offering services like shopping, befriending, transportation, and regular check-in calls. We also host four community lunches/teas each year, including a Summer Garden Party, to bring people together.

At Helping Hands, our mission is to provide practical and emotional support across the community, such as visiting or calling the lonely, shopping for the housebound, and offering transport to medical appointments.

We are known for being a caring, efficient, and confidential service, though we are not a professional care provider. As a volunteer-run organization, we cannot guarantee immediate availability of services.
We connect volunteers with opportunities through a database, matching those in need with those able to help. Volunteers are supported both within Helping Hands and by external professionals when needed. However, volunteers cannot administer medication or take on domestic tasks.

We work alongside existing community organisations, providing additional volunteers to support their efforts.
